Welcome to Kirkwall, the City of Chains. Kirkwall is a coastal city-state in the Free Marches, though many ages ago it was once a center for Tevinter slave-trade. The city itself is carved into a cliffside upon the coast of the Waking Sea, and serves as a pivotal port that controls most trade between the Free Marches and Ferelden. It has always been a violent and bloody city, with its history mottled by rebellion and a constant overthrowing of governance. Nowadays it is ruled over by Viscount Marlowe Dumar, though its true authority likely lies in Meredith Stannard, Knight-Commander of Kirkwall's Templar Order. [break][break]

So what does Kirkwall look like today? [break][break]

The year is 9:33 DRAGON. The Fifth Blight has been ended for two years and the shipwrecked Qunari — searching for their stolen Tome of Koslun — have been camping in the stone city for about the same time. Tensions are high. Kirkwall was inundated with refugees escaping the Blight years ago, and all those hungry, desperate mouths put a strain on the city; most choosing to further increase its already notable criminal activity in order to feed their bellies. The Chantry stokes dissent between the city's denizens and the Qunari currently sharing their home. And above all, is the rise of the Mage Underground, spurred into existence as the Templar's draconian rule over the Gallows and its mages grows evermore severe. [break][break]

In Kirkwall, it seems that every day holds the power to tip the balance in bedlam's favor. A rebellion is on the horizon, ever gaining speed. What part you choose to play in this headlong rush into chaos is yours.

• Unless someone decides to canon-claim Alistar and/or the Hero of Ferelden and directly change this (which absolutely feel free to!) then we will assume that Alistair solely rules Ferelden and the Hero of Ferelden (male) survived the Battle of Denerim by performing the dark ritual with Morrigan.
• Hawke has already completed his/her Deep Roads Expedition. There is currently no canon-claim on Hawke or his siblings, so any further development upon them is up in the air.
