✓ SKILLED - Matheus has had a blade in his hand since he was nine years old. Over twenty years in the Templar Order has made him an exceptional swordsman and a remarkable tactician to boot. Swordplay is about as natural to him as breathing. He's an efficient and perceptive fighter, able to discern his opponent's state of mind and understand how that'll influence their actions. He can read fear, confidence, desperation, or rage — see it in their eyes, the grip on their weapon, the sweat at their brow, etc. Matheus knows when the person he's facing feels pressured, out of options, and is about to fight like a desperate, cornered animal. When they have something hidden up their sleeve or are drawing on their last reserves. He can quickly judge whether they're standing with the easy, experienced confidence of someone who'll match him blow to blow, or are simply scared, armed only with a determined desire for self-preservation.

Matheus was born to a human mage in Kinhold Hold and immediately surrendered to the Chantry orphanage in Denerim. He never learned who his parents were and abandoned the longing to know long ago. As expected, when no magical abilities manifested in the young man, he was ushered into the Templar Order at nine years old, taking his vows and starting his recruit training. Despite being raised in the Chantry (or perhaps because he was raised in the Chantry), Matheus considers himself a faithful man but was never as devoted or enthusiastic in his studies as his tutors would have liked. Nonetheless, he proved himself to be an efficient swordsman and, perhaps more importantly, a dutiful and obedient student.

When he completed his training and became a full-fledged Templar at eighteen, Matheus was transferred to Starkhaven, where he grew into a fine, reputable soldier who kept good rapport with his superiors and peers alike. Among his fellow Templars, he was not only someone who could be depended on when backs were against the wall, but an easy companion who demanded very little of those around him. He took his duties seriously, but never took himself too seriously. Though skilled and dutiful, he never acted above his station or displayed any notable ambition or arrogance. Among the mages of Starkhaven, he was never known to be cruel or needlessly unkind. He was a man less severe than most — often free with his smiles, laughs, or easy conversations — but also one who carried himself with a thinly-veiled impartiality that spoke of a mercilessness in him that he could call upon without hesitation. He was not an aloof or even unfriendly Templar, but not one of his charges would doubt that he'd raise a sword against them with dutiful resolve if required.

Matheus also earned somewhat of a reputation as a skilled mage hunter. The "Chantry's Bloodhound", he proved stubborn and relentless when it came to sniffing out apostates or tracking those who escaped the Circle. While aggressive and unyielding in his pursuits, once his prey was inevitably pinned, he could transform into an apt negotiator; trading force for measured caution, coercion, and even compassion when such tactics were welcome. Despite this aptitude for pacification when the situation allowed, Matheus also showed no hesitation (or any obvious regret) in having to cut down a mage who proved too dangerous to bring back to the Circle. He was noted by his superiors to operate with decisive calm when it came to carrying out these duties, even with the most formidable maleficarum. As a Templar, he was capable of being merciless and dispassionate, but never without cause, and not rashly or out of simple fear. His target was returned or killed; either result seemingly had no effect upon Matheus, whether he be captor or executor.

Two years ago, when the Starkhaven Circle was burned to the ground and most of its mages transferred to Kirkwall, Matheus accompanied them.
